Abstract: Diniz, R, Del Vecchio, FB, Schaun, GZ, Oliveira, HB, Portella, EG, da Silva, ES, Formalioni, A, Campelo, PCC, Peyré-Tartaruga, LA, and Pinto, SS. Kinematic comparison of the roundhouse kick between taekwondo, karate, and muaythai. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2018-The roundhouse kick (RHK) is frequently executed in taekwondo, karate, and muaythai because of its high technical effectiveness during combat. The purpose of this study was to compare kinematic characteristics during RHK performance between ta… Show more

“…That relationship may suggest relatively high mechanical efficiency in tested contestants, according to the model describing relationships between mechanical work output and metabolism [ 49 ]. As was mentioned earlier, kickboxing belongs to a family of hitting martial arts similar to Muay Thai, karate and taekwondo, where upper and lower limbs are engaged in offensive actions [ 50 ]. Practitioners of all these sports use the same techniques of punches and kicks.…”

“…The latter aspect is critical and creates a substantial obstacle because competitors frequently compete at their lightest feasible body mass to battle against opponents of lesser mass (26). Research analyzing sport-specific kinematics of kicks (10,27) has enhanced coaches ability to identify the most effective exercises to generate increased force output, improving performance, compared with traditional training methods (25).…”

“…The roundhouse kick can be an effective technique when actioned by a high hip angular velocity; Diniz et al (10) found that when comparing the roundhouse kick technique, used in other striking-based martial arts, with Muay Thai, the angular velocity of the hip is greater and can produce a higher impact, causing destructive damage to gain points or incapacitate an opponent. The Teep kick (front push kick) also has similar efficacy; being one of the most used techniques in Muay Thai for attacking and countering attacks from the opponent, showing benefits from increasing competitors kicking performance impact power (14,19,22).…”
