“…The genotypes with IDs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 73 which were commonly reported in Indian populations were observed at higher frequencies confirming the earlier findings. Though the number of unique genotypes reported in the present study is low compared to studies from related Indian populations (Guha et al ., ; Pydi et al ., ), these unique genotypes add upto the genetic diversity of KIR genotypes observed in Indian populations and could be a result of racial admixture and local specific selection pressures. As observed in other studies from India, the AB and BB group genotypes were more frequent (Rajalingam et al ., , ; Kulkarni et al ., ).…”

“…Certain KIRs are involved in inhibiting the cytotoxic function (KIR3DL1-KIR3DL3, KIR2DL1-KIR2DL3 and KIR2DL5), while some cause activation (KIR3DS1, KIR2DS1-KIR2DS5), and KIR2DL4 has both the functions. Inhibitory receptors regulate the activity of NK cells by recognizing HLA class I ligands present in the target cells, while the ligands for most of the activating receptors are unknown (Rajagopalan & Long, 2005).…”

“…Previous studies have shown the involvement of KIR genes and their ligands in infectious diseases, such as AIDS, malaria, hepatitis C, tuberculosis and leprosy , autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis, pemphigus foliaceus and ankylosing spondylitis , and also in many types of cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and bladder, colorectal and laryngeal tumours . KIR receptors exert their influence on susceptibility to or protection from certain diseases by means of a balance between the signals of activation or inhibition that regulate the function of NK cells.…”

“…A growing number of studies have identified associations between the presence of the activating KIR2DS1 receptor and susceptibility to autoimmune diseases 68 , reproductive success 9, 10 , control of viral infections 11, 12 and malignancy in cancer 1315 . However, the precise ligands for KIR2DS1, and their consequences for KIR2DS1+ NK-cell function, are not well characterized.…”
