Kikuchi’s disease associated with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

Abstract: We describe a unique association of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (Kikuchi's disease) and chronic lymphocytic (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis in a patient who presented with significant cervical lymphadenopathy and a goiter. This case illustrates the value of lymph node biopsy combined with the fine needle aspiration of the thyroid in determining the nature of the relationship between the goiter and lymphadenopathy.

“…Although certain microorganisms such as EBV, parvovirus B19, HTLV-1, HHV6, and HHV8 are suspected as provoking agents, no convincing evidence concerning their role has been found (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Association with SS has not been reported previously, although it is well known that KFD can be preceded or associated with other autoimmune disorders including systemic lupus erythematosus, mixed connective tissue disease, Still's disease, polymyositis, or Hashimoto's thyroiditis (16)(17)(18)(19).…”

“…[10][11][12][13] Our literature search disclosed 4 reports of HT showing lymphadenopathies; however, the lymphadenitis in these cases was consistent with Kikuchi's disease (KD). [14][15][16][17] In 2 of these cases, connective tissue disease was also present. 13,15 In our cases, none of the lymph node aspirates was in favor of KD.…”
