Ki-1—positive lymphoma developing 10 years after the diagnosis of hairy cell leukemia

Abstract: The case is described of a 62-year-old man with a 10-year history of hairy cell leukemia (HCL) who subsequently had a large-cell anaplastic or so-called Ki-1-positive lymphoma. Immunocytochemical staining of the lymphomatous node revealed positivity for Ki-1 (CD30) and epithelial membrane antigen in the tumor cells, and flow cytometric analysis showed simultaneous expression of Leu M5 (CD11c) and Leu 14 (CD22). Although HCL has been reported to coexist with both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, th… Show more

“…8 This pair of markers is considered relatively specific for HCL, but can also be seen in other tumors. 1 Nevertheless, in this case HCL cells were not studied by flow cytometry; thus there was no direct evidence that these 2 groups of tumor cells shared the same immunophenotype (CD11cϩ, CD22ϩ).…”

“…[4][5][6] Three studies provided circumstantial evidence. [7][8][9] Only 2 cases were well documented with immunophenotyping and molecular genetic studies, but opposite conclusions were drawn in terms of the clonal relationship between these 2 tumors. 10, 11 The present report documents a case of HCL that transformed to a high-grade large cell lymphoma.…”
