Khat (Catha Edulis) as a Risk Factor for Cardiovascular Disorders: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background:About 20 million people worldwide are believed to be using khat. Although some studies reported that khat chewing might result in cardiovascular disorders, conclusive evidence is limited.Method:The objective of this review was to synthesize the best available evidence for the effect of khat on the cardiovascular system. Databases searched were PubMed, Cochrane database of systematic reviews, CINAHL, poplin, LILACS, MedNar and Scopus. All papers included in the review were subjected to rigorous appra… Show more

“…This study strengths the fact that high body mass index increases blood cholesterol level which leads to hypertension [ 86 ]. Furthermore, this review evidenced that khat (Catha edulis) chewers were 42% more likely to develop hypertension than their counterparts which was similar to the studies conducted in Ethiopia, Yemen, and a meta-analysis study from Ethiopia [ 87 90 ]. Khat contains chemicals cathinone, cathine, and amphetamine.…”

“…[ 11 ] The same effect may happen in the CCAs and cause elevation of the CCA Doppler indices. This effect might be attributed to the peripheral vasoconstrictor effect of cathinone,[ 6 4 7 12 ] which may be persistent for a long time in regular khat chewers.…”

“…Khat chewers reportedly had a higher risk of various cardiovascular diseases, such as cardiogenic shock, recurrent myocardial ischemia, and ventricular arrhythmia. [ 6 ] Khat chewing is also associated with stroke and hypertension. [ 6 7 ] Therefore, studying the hemodynamics of the common carotid arteries (CCAs) may contribute to predicting cerebrovascular abnormalities.…”
