Mother tongue interference can affect students' English speaking skill especially in pronouncing the words intrinsically. Considering Rejang language is the dominant mother language used by students at IAIN Curup, the students as EFL learners often use their mother tongue in daily communication and at campus, and Rejang students pronounce English words in a different way. This study investigated the forms of Rejang language interfering students in pronouncing English words, and how they were interfered. This was a descriptive study in the field of English pronunciation elaborated in a qualitative way. Recorded interviews and pronunciation testing were the main techniques of collecting data. Interview guide, validated pronunciation test, and document analysis were the instruments. There were 16 students who used Rejang language in daily communication, and they were incorporated as the subjects of this study. The data analysis adopted Miles and Huberman's model comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings revealed that Rejang Language as the dominant students' mother language at IAIN Curup interfered students' English pronunciation across the elements of consonants, vowels, and diphthongs. There were five ways of interference. First, they sounded short vowels into long vowels. Second, they sounded long vowels into short vowels. Third, they changed vowels. Fourth, they changed diphthongs into vowels. Fifth, they changed vowels into diphthongs. However, the interference that influenced English words was only in the dimension of pronouncing English words, while the meanings were still understandable. In conclusion, the interference was positive since Rejang language's phonemic sounds have some similarities to those of English, so this condition does not potentially change the meanings of English words.

Background: The making of errors in second language acquisition, especially in writing, is natural, but the errors should not be ignored and need to be treated properly. Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive research are to identify the types of errors occured in the narrative writing of first-year students at STIE Port Numbay in Jayapura, explain the causes of the errors and the strategies applied to correct them and to prevent them from happening in the future. Design and methods: This research is a descriptive qualitative one that uses the content analysis method. The data were taken from 20 narrative writings about daily activities made by 20 first-year students of STIE Port Numbay in Jayapura who major in Development Economics and took the English 1 course in the Odd Semester of the 2020/2021 Academic Year. Results: The findings revealed that there are 9 types of error occured i.e. omission, addition, misselection, misordering, blending, misformations, misspellings, sentence errors and semantic errors in lexis. The errors are caused by interference of the first language or interlingual, inadequate mastery of the target language rules or intralingual and limited vocabulary. The strategies for the error correction are direct feedback and exposing the target language use by its native speakers so that the learners can compare it with their own L2 use. To prevent the same errors, the instructor can improve the learners' mastery of the target language rules by using creative and varied teaching methods and materials as well as encouraging the learners to develop the habit of reading English texts in order to improve their vocabulary and to obtain input about the use of English in writing. Kandoushi is a word that expresses an impression, also called “interjection” in Indonesian, and is one type of emotive interjection. This study examines the meaning and use of emotive interjection, and its similarities and differences in Japanese and Indonesian. The method in this study used a descriptive contrastive analysis method with the note-taking technique. The data is taken from the dialogue in the Japanese anime “ReLIFE” and the Indonesian TV series “Tetangga Masa Gitu” and “Bajaj Bajuri”. The results of the study showed that the emotive interjection in Japanese and Indonesian had several similar meanings, particularly expressing feelings of pleasure, admiration, annoyance, confusion, and distress. Then, both of them have the same use, which is used to confirm the speech partner’s expression, is used to conclude something, is used to protest against the speech partner, is used to show approval, and is used to realize something. Interjection comprehension is very important in understanding an utterance intent in a conversation so that communication can take place with native speakers or fellow foreign students. This study only examines the interjections in terms of the emotive feeling/impression of being surprised. Therefore, for future research, it is expected to research form, meaning, and the use of other interjections in terms of phonology.
