Keratinizing dermatoses. Combined data from four centers on short-term topical treatment with tretinoin

Abstract: In four medical centers, 40 patients with keratinizing dermatoses were treated with topical tretinoin (vitamin A acid) 0.1% cream and salicylic acid 2% cream in a short-term, double-blind study. Tretinoin was the more effective treatment for several of the keratinizing dermatoses with the exception of palmar-plantar hyperkeratosis, for which it was not effective in the concentration and method of application used. The most striking clinical responses occurred in patients with lamellar ichthyosis and ichthyosis… Show more

“…A short-term paired comparison on two patients with XLI suggested 0.1% tretinoin cream was superior to 0.1% topical tretinoin cream. 59 Hofmann et al 60 recently demonstrated superior efficacy of the receptor-selective retinoid tazarotene at 0.05% concentration in the treatment of 4 patients with XLI. Systemic absorption of this agent when used topically for ichthyoses has since been shown to be minimal.…”

“…and reversing ectropion in congenital ichthyosis. 9,10,18,20,21,24,[48][49][50][51] Most case reports have focused on lamellar ichthyosis, although improvement also has been reported for other forms of ichthyosis, including other autosomal recessive congenital ichthyoses, recessive X-linked ichthyosis, 52 epidermolytic ichthyosis, 53,54 and erythrokeratodermia variabilis. 55 There are more reports on the effective use of tazarotene than other topical retinoids, but no direct comparisons have been performed.…”
