Keep it to yourself? Parent emotion suppression influences physiological linkage and interaction behavior.

Abstract: Parents can influence children’s emotional responses through direct and subtle behavior. In this study we examined how parents’ acute stress responses might be transmitted to their 7- to 11-year-old children and how parental emotional suppression would affect parents’ and children’s physiological responses and behavior. Parents and their children (N = 214; Ndyads = 107; 47% fathers) completed a laboratory visit where we initially separated the parents and children and subjected the parent to a standardized lab… Show more

“…Diarrhea in early childhood has been linked to negative cognitive outcomes [50][51][52], and the sanitation intervention may reduce children's exposure to this factor [53]. Second, improved housing quality may also be linked with on-track cognitive development by protecting parental mental health [54,55], which could potentially affect parent-child interactions [56,57]. Water and sanitation interventions have shown effectiveness in reducing maternal depressive symptoms [43].…”

“…We processed the data in 30-second intervals using Mindware’s heart rate variability software (HRV 3.0.25, Mindware Technologies, Gahanna, OH), which identified the R-point of each heartbeat on the ECG waveform. We chose intervals of 30 seconds because they are long enough to capture changes in IBI due to psychological experiences and because, in our experience, they tend to capture linkage that occurs during the natural back-and-forths and exchanges that occur in conversations ( Thorson et al , 2019b ; Waters et al , 2020 ).…”

“…However, we know of no prior research on father–preschooler RSA synchrony. Some work shows physiological synchrony between fathers and older children but that there are differences in direction between mothers and fathers: in a stress contagion paradigm, mothers shaped child physiology, whereas children shaped father physiology (Waters et al., 2020). Other studies show no evidence of father–child RSA synchrony in older children (Li et al., 2020).…”
