Karyotypes of two American field crickets: Gryllus rubens and Gryllus sp. (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)

Abstract: The karyotypes of Gryllus rubens (Scudder) and Gryllus sp. collected in the US were studied using conventional Giemsa staining and two differential staining methods. Both species had a chromosome complement of 2n = 28 + XX/XO, and the X chromosome was large and metacentric. In addition, nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) were detected in the short arm of one pair in the two species, and the NOR showed variation in size. The two species had species-specific chromosome configuration and C-banding patterns. In Gry… Show more

“…The diploid number and the sex system of G . assimilis observed in this study is identical to that previously described [ 40 ] and resembles that of most of the other Gryllus species that have been analyzed [ 10 , 13 , 60 , 61 , 62 ]. However, reduction of the diploid number has been observed in this genus [ 10 ], which includes the polymorphic condition of G .…”

“…A less condensed chromatin region, usually heteromorphic and similar to that detected in pair 5 of Anurogryllus sp., was also encountered in one autosomal pair of other species of crickets ( Warchalowska-Sliwa 1980 ; Lamborot and Alvarez-Sarret 1985 ; Das and Das 1991 ; Zefa 1999 ; Mesa and Zefa 2004 ; Yoshimura 2005 ; Portugal and Mesa 2007 ). In Anurogryllus sp., the uncondensed chromatin region was representative of the NOR, considering that in all the studied specimens the short arm of both chromosomes of pair 5 was silver impregnated.…”
