Karyological studies in twelve accessions ofCarthamus tinctoriusi

Abstract: Karyology of the twelve accessions of Carthamus tinctorius L. were investigated. Diploid chromosome numbers and the basic chromosome number of the studied accessions were obtained as 2n=24 and x=12 respectively. The chromosomes were assorted in to different categories on the basis of arm's ratio. These were further subdivided in to different types, on the basis of total length of the chromosome. From an evolutionary point of view, variation in total chromosome length without major changes in the karyotype form… Show more

“…All of the studied varieties and lines have a chromosome number of 2X=2n=24 as supported with the earlier studies (Knowles 1988, Anjali and Srivastava, 2012, Yazdani 2013). On the whole, karyotypes of the most analysed varieties had a predominance of metacentric (mc) chromosomes.…”

“…Tcar 13 (E12) had larger chromosomes as well as a larger genome than other samples. Anjali and Srivastava (2012) investigated karyomorphological features of twelve accessions of C. tinctorius. Their total chromosome lengths range from 38.79 -55.56 µm.…”

“…The karyomorphometric data along with the different indices for estimating the karyotype asymmetry have been recognized and employed as part of the prebreeding stage in several crops. Moreover, chromosome characterization has also allowed for the detection of chromosome polymorphism in Chinese populations of Salvia miltiorrhiza (2n = 18) (Song et al 2010b), the identification of a novel germplasm and the diversity in different accessions of Carthamus tinctorius (Anjali and Srivastava 2012), and the distinction of three hybrids in ornamental hydrangeas (hortensias) (Van Laere et al 2008), for instance. The use of karyotypes in comparative studies has been a good parameter for changing estimates in the genome, which is frequently related to evolution in higher plants (Romero Zarco 1986).…”
