Acne is a prevalent skin disorder that aff ects 80–85% of teenagers globally. Citronella oil is one of the natural compounds that has been known to potentially treat acne, but its application is limited due to its greasiness and uncomfortable sensation on skin. This study aimed to optimize the concentration of cetyl alcohol as a viscosity enhancer that can produce a physically stable cream preparation and to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the optimized formula against Propionibacterium acnes. Following the emulsifi cation process, the physical characteristics of the fi ve cream formulas, including organoleptic, homogeneity, emulsion type, pH, adhesion, specifi c gravity, viscosity, and stability were evaluated. Formula 3 (F3), cream formulation with 6% cetyl alcohol having physical characteristics of a white homogeneous cream with a pronounced lemongrass scent, emulsion type o/w, pH of 6.30 ± 0.02, adhesion of 16.85 ± 0.58 s, a specifi c gravity of 1.031 ± 0.009 g/mL, and viscosity of 4418 ± 182 m Pas was chosen as the optimized formula. F3 was then subjected to antibacterial testing against P. acne and showed a 9.35 mm inhibition zone. Cream-based citronella oil, therefore, becomes a promising preparation for acne treatment

Introduction: In Indonesia, the average dengue cases are 121,191 each year with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.69%. Mosquito control with common chemical methods will negatively impact the environment and human health and can cause mosquitoes to develop resistance. Environmentally-friendly replacement chemicals derived from plants such as citronella contains 16.27% citronella and 19.88% geraniol. In addition, lavender plants also contain 35% alcohol comprising linalool and geraniol as well as other chemicals such as borneol. Furthermore, 8-20% of camphor and borneol in rosemary can also be a natural mosquito repellent ingredient. Methods: This study is a True Experiment with The Posttest-Only Controlled Group Design. The number of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes used for each treatment was 20. The study subjects were divided into 4 groups comprising 0.4 ppm of citronella, lavender, and rosemary essential oils and aquades as control. Replication was carried out 3 times and observations were conducted for 20 minutes. Results and Discussion: The Anova Factorial test resulted in a p-value of ≤ 0.05. In addition, there was a significant difference in the number of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes expelled from humidifier vapor. Furthermore, the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test showed that citronella essential oil was most effective in repelling mosquitoes because it has a p-value of ≤ 0.05 and largest average difference between other essential oils. Conclusion: Essential oils from citronella are most effective and stable for 30 seconds to 20 minutes to repel mosquitoes compared to lavender and rosemary essential oils

Semoyo is one of the districts located in Gunungkidul Regency. The community engages in the cultivation of traditional medicinal plants. One of the most widely cultivated plants is citronella. The community produces a significant amount of citronella, but it has yet to be processed into high-value economic products. Currently, citronella has emerged as a promising commodity because it can be used as a raw material to produce essential oil. The production of citronella essential oil is carried out through steam-hydro distillation. This research aims to test the distillation characteristics to determine the potential production of citronella essential oil and to decide the rate and capacity of essential oil production using citronella as the raw material. Based on the test results, the optimal duration for the distillation process of 2,000 grams of citronella was 60 minutes, with a maximum duration of 90 minutes. The yield of citronella essential oil obtained from this test was 0.414%. The resulting citronella essential oil had a density of 0.920 grams/mL, a clear appearance, a distinctive lemongrass aroma, and a light-yellow color.
