Oyuncu gerekmemektedir. Sahne, oyunun başından sonuna kadar boş kalacaktır; tek istisna, yaratacağı çarpıcı gölgelerden faydalanılabilecek olan kürsüdür. Oyun başlamak üzereyken, hem sahneye, hem de salona, mutlak karanlık hâkim olmalıdır (ışıklı giriş-çıkış tabelaları kapatılmalı ve salona hiçbir ışık süzmesinin girmemesi için gereken bütün önlemler baştan alınmalıdır.) Mutlak Karanlık esnasında Mutlak Sessizlik sağlanmalı ve izleyicilerin tahammül sınırlarının sonuna kadar korunmalıdır. İzleyiciler bu durumdan rahatsız olup, kıpırdanmaya başladıkları an, bir metronom sesi duyulur (pianississimo'dan forte'ye). Metronom sesini duyan izleyici, yeniden sessizleşir. Metronom sesi, izleyicilerin duyabilmek için kulaklarını zorlamalarını gerektirecek kadar alçalır. Salona yeniden mutlak sessizlik ve karanlık hâkim olur.
