“…The ap 56f mutant of D. melanogaster has dramatically decreased JH synthesis (12% of the wild‐type rate) (Altaratz et al ., 1990, 1991) and a reduced JH titre (M. Bownes & H. Rembold, unpublished data). Therefore, JH degradation could be lowered in ap 56f if it is regulated by the hormone titre, as is the case during metamorphosis (see review by Hammock, 1985).…”

“…The Drosophila ap gene encodes the LIM‐homeodomain transcription factor (Bourgouin et al ., 1992; Cohen et al ., 1992). ap has pleiotrophic effects: its function is essential for viability, normal development of the wings and of a subset of embryonic muscles (Wilson, 1981a,b; Bourgouin et al ., 1992), for normal male and female sexual behaviour and female fertility (Gavin & Williamson, 1976; Ringo et al ., 1991, 1992) and for JH production (Altaratz et al ., 1990, 1991). We used the ap 56f allele because it does not cause the sterility and precocious adult death which is observed with some ap alleles (Wilson, 1981a,b).…”

“…Corpus allatum of young, reproductively immature wild-type D. melunoguster produce significantly more JHIII and MF on the first day after adult eclosion (Altaratz et al, 1990(Altaratz et al, , 1991 and we have found increased production of JHIII and MF to be invariably linked to stress or reduced levels of total JHB3 biosynthesis in vitro. In adult Culliphoru vomitoriu CA, an excess of exogenous FA leads to accumulation of JHIII (7-fold above control levels) but no additional JHB, is produced (Duve et al, 1992).…”
