La Ilustración Popular Económica, decenario católico valenciano poco estudiado, fue uno de los primeros periódicos confesionales que respondieron en España a la llamada de Pío IX a combatir el librepensamiento mediante la propaganda y la difusión de textos literarios edificantes y morales. Su salida (agosto de 1869) precedió en más de un año a la barcelonesa Revista Popular de Félix Sardá y Salvany (1871), aunque, esta ha merecido mayor atención historiográfica (Hibb: 1995: 89-114; Hernández Cano: 2014: 150-151). En este artículo se tratará de ofrecer un resumen de sus fundamentos doctrinales y noticia del extenso programa literario de este «Periódico-biblioteca» de amplia difusión fuera de su ciudad de origen, sostenido por un grupo de propagandistas de la Juventud Católica, de expresión castellana, algunos de los cuales se incorporaron años después a la Renaixença valenciana.
