Jewish Persecutions and Weather Shocks: 1100–1800

Abstract: What factors caused the persecution of minorities in premodern Europe? Using panel data consisting of 1,366 persecutions of Jews from 936 European cities between 1100 and 1800, we test whether persecutions were more likely following colder growing seasons. A one standard deviation decrease in growing season temperature in the previous five-year period increased the probability of a persecution by between 1 and 1.5 percentage points (relative to a baseline of 2 %). This effect was strongest in weak states and w… Show more

“…Anderson, Johnson, and Koyama (2016) explore the economic and climatic factors behind Jewish persecutions throughout medieval and early modern Europe. They find that periods of cold temperature lowered agricultural productivity and made persecutions more likely and that this effect is largest in areas with weaker states.…”

“…In this article, I examine expulsions of Jews in the medieval western Holy Roman Empire. In related research, Johnson and Koyama and coauthors (Finley and Koyama 2018;Johnson and Koyama 2019;Anderson, Johnson, and Koyama 2017) have investigated antisemitic violence in medieval Europe. They do not differentiate between expulsion and mob violence, as they are interested in all types of religious persecution.…”

“…1550-1850) was a contractionary shock. 2 Our empirical strategy is similar in spirit to that of Dell et al (2012), who examine the link between temperature and GDP per capita during the post World War II period by employing panel data estimation. The objective is thus to obtain the best possible estimate of the reduced-form impact from temperature on labor productivity.…”
