Alien plant species can have two side effects, either positively in terms of the utilization of these species to fulfill human needs, or negatively in terms of their invasion which might threaten biodiversity and reduce land productivity. Yet, it is not clear how an introduced plant species can be carefully managed and utilized (so-called Naturalized Alien Plant Species/NAPS) so that the NAPS does not become Invasive Alien Plant Species (IAPS). Using Cibodas Biosphere Reserves (CBR), West Java, Indonesia as a case study, this study aims to investigate the utilization of Naturalized Alien Plant Species (NAPS) by local communities in the buffer zone of CBR and quantify the utilization of NAPS based on cultural perspective using Index Cultural Significance (ICS) framework. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires and interviewing 90 respondents in three locations around CBR: Bodogol, Cibodas, and Gekbrong. The results showed that the community used 72 Naturalized Alien Plant Species, with 30% of the utilized plants were from Asteraceae family. Centella asiatica was the most widely used species, but the species with the highest Index Cultural Significance value was Artemisia vulgaris. Based on the ICS classification, there were ten species (13.89%) with high significance values, 17 species (23.61%) with moderate significance, 30 species (41.67%) with low significance, and 15 species (20.83%) with very low significance. Species with high significance values were Artemisia vulgaris, Chimonobambusa quadrangularis, Bidens pilosa, Mentha arvensis, Amaranthus spinosus, Centella asiatica, Cyphomandra betacea, Calliandra calothyrsus, Fragaria vesca, and Solanum torvum. Based on these results, the recommended strategy is to regularly harvest the Naturalized Alien Plant Species with high ICS value to control their population and fulfill community needs.

As a mitigation target for Indonesia’s Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030, Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (GHSNP) has a high potential. However, there is a lack of data on tree species composition and vegetation cover, particularly in the traditional zone (TZ). This study aims to estimate the vegetation cover of GHSNP in 2016, 2019, and 2022, as well as tree species composition in the TZ compared to the wilderness zone (WZ). This study used Sentinel-2 imagery and plot establishment for vegetation analysis in both zones. The most dominant class of vegetation cover in GHSNP from 2016 to 2022 is in class 5 which has highly dense vegetation. The large area class 5 increased by around 2.17% from 2016 to 2022. There were 17 species found in TZ and 24 species in WZ. Local communities are applying the traditional agroforestry of Poh-pohan (Pilea trinervia) as the main commodity and Pinus merkusii for the shade trees. P. merkusii and Maesopsis eminii are the most frequently found in TZ and WZ due to the former status of GHSNP as a production forest. Agroforestry systems can enhance biodiversity as a conservation effort and Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 actions.

Invasive Plant is species that dominate an area or places, both are native species and non-native species. Invasive Plants is one of the crucial problems in ecosystem management because it is a major component of global environmental change, threats to biodiversity and local species, as well as, causes of changes in nutrient cycles, fire cycles, hydrological cycles, and energy balance. The purpose of this study is to prove that plants far from the road are more commonly invaded by invasive species and that physical and biological factors affect the growth of invasive species. The research was conducted at the Dramaga Research Forest, Bogor from June 2020 to August 2020. This study used a vegetation analysis method, which is using nesting plots that have a size of 2 x 2 m for seedlings, 5 x 5 m for saplings, 10 x 10 m for poles, and 20 x 20 m for trees. Plots were made in two locations, close to the road and far from the road. The location close to the road was 5 - 10 meters, and far from the road was 70 - 80 meters The total plots made in this study were 16 plots in each size. The results showed that the highest diversity was found at the level of seedlings, namely medium status (2.00-3.00) according to the Shannon-Wiener index. The results showed that the statistical analysis of the diversity of weeds in the Dramaga Research Forest were not significantly different, between plants close to the road and plants far from the road. This is causing by physical factors that are not significantly different based on statistical tests. The growth of invasive plant species is influenced by several factors, such as light intensity, temperature, humidity, and soil pH.
