This article presents an approach to providing real-time support for Java's Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and its integration with the RTSJ memory model in order to leave out garbage collection. A new construct for remote objects, called No-heap Remote object (NhRo), is introduced. The use of a NhRo guarantees that memory required to perform a remote invocation (at the server side) does not use heap memory. Thus, the aim is to avoid garbage collection in the remote invocation process, improving predictability and memory isolation of distributed Java-based real-time applications. The article presents the bare model and the main programming patterns that are associated with the NhRo model. Sun RMI implementation has been modified to integrate the NhRo model in both static and dynamic environments.

Abstract. With the growth and the development of new applications for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), sensor nodes are able to handle more complex events that require higher processing performance and hardware flexibility. These new features intend to meet the requirements of various applications, as well as to provide customized platforms that have only the needed resources. WSNs often need a flexible architecture able to adapt to design and environment changes. The use of reconfigurable architectures is an alternative to bring more flexibility and more processing capability for the sensor node. This paper proposes a reconfigurable and customizable sensor node called FemtoNode which has a reconfigurable platform and a wireless module to support applications for WSNs, using an object-oriented language Java as specification language of its architecture. The proposed concepts were validated with a case study of an heterogeneous wireless sensor network composed of sensors nodes based on different platforms, whose results are described in this work.

This paper presents a virtual platform for the development and test of application software, low-level software, and hardware components for an MPSoC (Multiprocessor System-on-Chip) platform, where components are interconnected by a network-onchip (NoC). The environment is aimed at the development of multithread real-time embedded applications in Java language. Communication and task management services are provided that are able to deal with real-time restrictions, following the RTSJ standard. SystemC models are used to describe processors and network connections that have equivalent descriptions in VHDL. Performance and power / energy evaluation are made possible, helping to shorten cycles for embedded system development, integration, and test.
