“…His father James Hall Pringle (1801–73) was a tenant farmer at Hyndlee in the Scottish Borders, a farm described in Walter Scott's novel ‘Guy Mannering’. Other authors 1–3 have suggested that George's mother Mary Hogarth (1803– 50) was related to William Hogarth (1697–1764) the artist and to Charles Dickens (1812–70). Examination of the relevant birth and death certificates 4 does not reveal any obvious relationship to either.…”
