We present Monte Carlo preliminary results about the feasibility to detect the χ c family in p-p collisions at 14 TeV in the ALICE Central Barrel at CERN LHC. The χ c1 and χ c2 were forced to decay in the radiative channel J /Ψ + γ → e + e − + γ and were merged with a protonproton non-biased collision. After Monte Carlo transport and simulation of the detector response, the e + , e − and converted γ were reconstructed and identified in the ALICE ITS, TPC and TRD detectors. Separate signals corresponding to γ from χ c1 and from χ c2 were observed. The position and relative weight of the fit to gaussians agreed with the input values within the statistical limits.PACS 13.85.Qk · 14.40.Gx · 24.85.+p · 25.40.Ep

We report on charmonium measurements [J/ψ (1S), ψ ′ (2S), and χc (1P)] in p+p collisions at √ s = 200 GeV. We find that the fraction of J/ψ coming from the feed-down decay of ψ ′ and χc in the midrapidity region (|y| < 0.35) is 9.6 ± 2.4% and 32 ± 9%, respectively. We also present the pT and rapidity dependencies of the J/ψ yield measured via dielectron decay at midrapidity (|y| < 0.35) and via dimuon decay at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2). The statistical precision greatly exceeds that reported in our previous publication [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 232002 (2007)]. The new results are compared with other experiments and discussed in the context of current charmonium production models.

The interpretation of the J/ψ suppression patterns observed in nuclear collisions, at CERN and RHIC, as a signature of the formation of a deconfined phase of QCD matter, requires knowing which fractions of the measured J/ψ yields, in pp collisions, are due to decays of heavier charmonium states. From a detailed analysis of the available mid-rapidity charmonium hadro-production cross sections, or their ratios, we determine that the J/ψ feed-down contributions from ψ ′ and χ c decays are, respectively, (8.1 ± 0.3)% and (25 ± 5)%. These proton-proton values are derived from global averages of the proton-nucleus measurements, assuming that the charmonium states are exponentially absorbed with the length of matter they traverse in the nuclear targets.
