Study of ψ′ and χcdecays as feed-down sources ofJ/ψ hadro-production

Abstract: The interpretation of the J/ψ suppression patterns observed in nuclear collisions, at CERN and RHIC, as a signature of the formation of a deconfined phase of QCD matter, requires knowing which fractions of the measured J/ψ yields, in pp collisions, are due to decays of heavier charmonium states. From a detailed analysis of the available mid-rapidity charmonium hadro-production cross sections, or their ratios, we determine that the J/ψ feed-down contributions from ψ ′ and χ c decays are, respectively, (8.1 ± 0.… Show more

“…Figure 26 compares the feed-down fraction obtained from our χ c → J/ψ + γ measurement with other experiments over a broad range of collision energy and x F , as well as over many different colliding species [73,[77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84]. The value measured in this work, F J/ψ χc = 32 ± 9%, is consistent with the world average of 25 ± 5 % after accounting for A dependencies in the fixed target experiments [76] 4 . CEM estimate an energy and p T independent χ c feed-down of 40% [52] whereas recent NLO NRQCD calculations estimate 25-30% at p T = 10 GeV/c [85].…”

“…For p+p collisions at SPS, we use the global average values of the fractions f χc = 25% from the χ c decay and f ψ ′ (2S) = 8% from the ψ ′ decay [36]. The cross sections for J/ψ, χ c and ψ ′ production in a p+p collision at the SPS are then given, respectively, by…”

“…In addition to the directly produced J/ψ, the decays of heavier charmonium states, such as the χ c and ψ(2S), also contribute to the inclusive J/ψ yield. These two sources (direct and charmonium decays) are defined as prompt J/ψ, where the contribution from charmonium decays is about 35% as measured in pp collisions [33]. Since heavier charmonia are less strongly bound than the J/ψ they should be more easily dissolved in a deconfined medium [34].…”
