Ixodes ricinus ticks removed from humans in Northern Europe: seasonal pattern of infestation, attachment sites and duration of feeding

Abstract: BackgroundThe common tick Ixodes ricinus is the main vector in Europe of the tick-borne encephalitis virus and of several species of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, which are the etiological agents of Lyme borreliosis. The risk to contract bites of I. ricinus is dependent on many factors including the behaviour of both ticks and people. The tick’s site of attachment on the human body and the duration of tick attachment may be of clinical importance. Data on I. ricinus ticks, which were found attac… Show more

“…Attachment of ticks has been frequently related to the fixation of their mouthparts to the host skin (Lees, 1948;Wallade and Rice, 1982;Sauer et al, 1995;Voltzit, 1996;Grenacher et al, 2001;Buczek and Bartosik, 2006;Allan, 2010;Francischetti et al, 2010;Heinze et al, 2012;Wilhelmsson et al, 2013;Sonenshine and Roe, 2014a). But before a blood meal, they have to seek hosts and find suitable sites on the host to penetrate (Schmalfuss, 1994).…”

“…Both the vector and the bacterium are prevalent in southern Scandinavia, and ticks frequently attach to humans and occasionally transmit B. burgdorferi (1)(2)(3)(4). Lyme borreliosis (LB) is also common in parts of the United States.…”
