“…When examining the structure of AFLP patterns of isolates in relation to geographic variables, alongside the substantial variation ascribed to differences among isolates, as consistently found in S. meliloti populations [8,48,55,58], sharp clustering according to the sampling region was observed. This confirms that the genetic differentiation of rhizobial populations is mainly ascribed to geographic isolation, as previously found by other authors [29,33,35,55], thereby enabling application of the classic isolation-by-distance model [62] to nodulating rhizobial populations.…”

“…In Sinorhizobium natural population studies, it is usually recognized that isolates can significantly differ in their pH and salt tolerance, and indigenous strains can tolerate lower pH values and higher salt concentration [11,14,48,58]; on the other hand, in Croatia, there are many acidic soils and salinity can differ as well; therefore, it was important to check these phenotypes in the strains isolated in the present study. Table 1 summarizes results of phenotypic characterization of isolates (detailed in Table S4).…”

“…The strains and plasmids used in this work are listed in Table 1 and Supplementary Table S1 . In particular a collection of S. meliloti strains from different geographical areas was used (Carelli et al, 2000 ; Roumiantseva et al, 2002 , 2014 ; Talebi Bedaf et al, 2008 ; Trabelsi et al, 2009 , 2010 ). S. meliloti strains were cultured on solid or liquid TY medium with 0.2 g/liter CaCO 3 , or Vincent Minimal Medium (VMM, or Rhizobium Defined Medium, RDM), while Escherichia coli strains were grown in Luria Bertani (LB) medium, supplemented with antibiotics when necessary.…”
