“…Pre-study screenings were conducted using chart reviews, to verify a diagnosis of either schizophrenia and/or mood disorders. Additionally, as part of the baseline interview, potential subjects were screened using the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) (Zung & Charalampous, 1975) and the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) (Gavin, Ross, & Skinner, 1989). Paticipants had to score a five or higher on either the MAST or DAST to be enrolled.…”

“…A score of 6 or above on the measure indicates serious difficulties with alcohol use ("problem drinking"). The MAST has been found to have good reliability and concurrent validity (Zung and Charalampous, 1975;Zung, 1978). Additionally the MAST has internal consistency as evidenced by Cronbach's alphas ranging from 0.83-0.93 (Gibbs, 1983).…”

“…There is some indication that the MAST itself, and measurably its offspring, the SMAST, is transportable to different cultural, ethnic, and national groups (Brady et al, 1982;Selzer, 1976;Zung & Charalampous, 1975). We did, however, take some liberties with the SMAST by having it translated specifically for this project.…”

“…Selzer, Vinokur and Van Rooijen (1975) developed a shortened version of the MAST, the SMAST. The SMAST correlates well with the MAST (coefficient of correlation 0.97, Zung & Charalampous, 1975). We further modified the SMAST, eliminating Question 9, because, at the point of the study, Alcoholics Anonymous was not generally available in Peru, leaving a total of 12 questions.…”
