Abstract: We propose a theory of prescriptive attribution as a theoretical framework for research on the justification of actions. Justification is viewed as one possible strategy of account-giving necessitated by violations of socially shared standards of conduct. The theory makes two main assumptions. First, at the core of every justification is an at least implicit reference to a basic ethical principle. Second, justifications are in several respects similar to reason attributions; they can, therefore, be conceived o… Show more

“…As Malle notes, there have not only been misinterpretations of PIR ; there have also been important omissions. To use the words of Gollan and Witte (this issue), the theoretical richness of PIR has not been fully explored. Furthermore, only very few authors (e.g., Laucken, 1974; Smedslund, 1988) have followed Heider in his attempt to provide a somewhat comprehensive analysis of common-sense psychology.…”

“…Just as individuals vary in personality traits, motives or value preferences, real situations differ in certain (mostly unknown) dimensions and can be categorized into various classes. Gollan and Witte (2008) relate value laden situations to Heider's concept of situational ought (1958). We further assume that the content structure of values that Schwartz (1992) found in the variance between individuals can also be applied to the variance between situations.…”

“…It is, however, not easy to relate the resulting categories to the ethical principles elaborated in moral philosophy (Strack & Gennerich, 2007). More in line with moral philosophy, Witte and Doll (1995;Gollan & Witte, 2008) proposed taxonomy of four principles: utilitarianism, deontology, intuitionism and hedonism. The results of their study…”

“…sonal Relations (1958). Guest editors Rainer Reisenzein and Udo Rudolph (2008) brought together a beautiful collection of essays and research papers celebrating Heider's lasting legacy, including contributions on the history of attribution research (e.g., Schönpflug, 2008;Smedslund, 2008;Weiner, 2008) as well as articles addressing current issues in attribution research (e.g., Gollan & Witte, 2008;Rudolph, 2008;Schyns & Hansbrough, 2008). I am particularly pleased to note that a wide reception of this special issue was facilitated by a promotional activity of Hogrefe publishers: electronic full-text versions of all articles have been made available free of charge for all, so please do encourage colleagues to view the issue at www.psycontent.com/content/1864-9335.…”
