Isotopes on the Beach, Part 2: Neodymium Isotopic Analysis for the Provenancing of Roman Glass‐making

Abstract: In this study, we have evaluated the applicability of Nd isotopic analysis for the provenancing of Roman glass and we present a database of Nd isotopic compositions of possible sand raw materials from the western Mediterranean, as a means of comparison for the growing number of isotopic studies on ancient glass. The 143Nd/144Nd isotope ratio of sands is a good indicator for their geological (and sometimes geographical) provenance. The use of the isotopic signature of Nd as a proxy for the source of silica in g… Show more

“…Though Hf and Nd isotopic data for sedimentary units directly beneath Etna are unavailable for comparison with cpx and WR values, Sicilian beach sand ε Nd derived from the western extension of sedimentary units underlying Etna and crustal rocks of south and central Italy are all considerably more enriched ( Fig. 2a; ε Nd -10.3 to -16.0, Conticelli et al, 2002;Brems et al, 2013). Such large differences make it unlikely that crustal sediments contributed to the Hf and Nd isotopic compositions observed in TSC cpx and WR materials.…”

Hafnium isotopic values for Italian sediments (Conticelli et al, 2002;Brems et al, 2013) are calculated from Nd isotopic data and both cases following the seawater array (SA) and the terrestrial array (TA) of Vervoort et al (2011) Trua et al (1998). “…Along the Mediterranean coast, the isotopic ratio for Nd (usually expressed as εNd) of coastal sands show an East to West gradient from the slightly negative value of the Nile delta (εNd = −1) to the strongly negative values of southern Spain (−12) and Western Sahara (−13) [39]. Sands from the Syro-Palestinian and Egyptian coast, where primary production sites were discovered and that are supposed to be the sources of sand for Roman, Late Antique and Byzantine glass, have an εNd between −5 and −6.…”
