Isotope-selective manipulation of Ca+using laser heating and cooling in a linear Paul trap

Abstract: We report on the isotope-selective manipulation of Ca+ using the laser-heating and laser-cooling techniques in a linear Paul trap. Only 40Ca+ was selectively laser-heated using the optical isotope shift and eliminated from the trap while keeping the target isotope in the trap. The elimination process of the dominant isotope 40Ca+ was investigated and 42, 43, 44, 48Ca+ in the natural isotope mixture of Ca+ generated by laser ablation were successfully observed by means of applying the appropriate dc voltage on … Show more

“…A few different methods have been employed to improve selectivity further [51,55,[74][75][76][77][78]. These methods involve heating the unwanted isotope out of the trap using either the cooling lasers [51,55,[74][75][76], or by applying an additional rf to the trap, exciting the secular motion [77,78].…”

“…There are indeed several papers on 43 Ca + spectroscopy using ion trap such as a research using resonance ionization [31] or isotope concentrated environment [32]. Our laboratory reported the spectroscopy using sympathetic cooling [33] and selective heating and cooling method [34]. In this research we realized a direct ion loading environment which is different from the other researches by introducing + Ca 43 Fig.…”

“…We plan to use the concept of isotope separation earlier applied to the elements like Ca and Cd in literature. [22][23][24] To the best of our knowledge, this approach has not yet been utilized for thorium ions under consideration.…”
