Isomerizing hydroformylation of fatty acid esters: Formation of ω‐aldehydes

Abstract: The isomerizing hydroformylation of fatty acid esters to oleochemicals with an additional o-standing aldehyde group can be performed at a relatively low temperature of 115 7C and a synthesis gas pressure of 20 bar. In the case of oleic acid ester, the best yield of linear aldehyde is 26%; in the case of linoleic acid ester, it is 34%. For both fatty compounds, a strong hydrogenation side reaction is observed, which can be explained by a steering effect of the ester group. The ester function of the fatty compou… Show more

“…The best regioselectivities obtained were always accompanied by relatively low chemoselectivities (plagued by significant hydrogenation) or low yields. The optimal "compromise" found at 10 bar and 120 • C allowed us to reach 60% chemoselectivity and l/b = 58:42, a result that ranks among the better ones reported in the hydroformylation of methyl oleate or oleonitrile with a single Rh-biphosphite system [22][23][24][25]. …”

“…To tackle the substrate hydrogenation, one of the most significant issues in tandem isomerization-hydroformylation [22,25], increasing the amount of carbon monoxide regarding the amount of hydrogen (i.e., CO/H 2 = 4:1) was investigated (Table 3). At 10 bar overall pressure (entry 10), as expected, a significant improvement in favor of hydroformylation was noted.…”

“…So ergab die isomerisierende Hydroformylierung von 1 b und 2 b in Gegenwart eines Rhodiumkatalysators den w-Aldehyd 28, allerdings nur in einer Ausbeute von 26 bzw. 34 % (Schema 10); [89] 10). [91] Neue biobasierte Polyole wurden durch Hydroformylierung von 1 b und einigen nativen Ölen in Gegenwart homogener Rhodiumkatalyatoren erhalten.…”
