Using laboratory and field experiments, the ability of Streptomyces aureus HP-S-01 to eliminate β-cypermethrin (β-CP) and its metabolite 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde (3-PBA) in soils was investigated. In the laboratory, 80.5% and 73.1% of the initial dose of β-CP and 3-PBA (50 mg kg(-1)) was removed in sterilized soils within 10 days, respectively, while in the same period, disappearance rate of β-CP and 3-PBA in non-sterilized soils was higher and reached 87.8% and 79.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the disappearance process followed the first-order kinetics and the half-life (T (1/2)) for β-CP and 3-PBA reduced by 20.3-52.9 and 133.7-186.8 days, respectively, as compared to the controls. The addition of sucrose to the soils enhanced the ability of strain HP-S-01 to eliminate β-CP and 3-PBA. Similar results were observed in the field experiments. The introduced strain HP-S-01 quickly adapted to the environment and rapidly removed β-CP and 3-PBA without any lag phases in the field experiments. Compared with the controls, 47.9% and 67.0% of applied dose of β-CP and 3-PBA was removed from the soils without extra carbon sources and 52.5% and 73.3% of β-CP and 3-PBA was eliminated in soils supplemented with sucrose within 10 days, respectively. Analysis of β-CP degradation products in soil indicated that the tested strain transform β-CP to 3-PBA and α-hydroxy-3-phenoxy-benzeneacetonitrile. However, both intermediates were transient and they disappeared after 10 days. Therefore, the selected actinomyces strain HP-S-01 is suitable for the efficient and rapid bioremediation of β-CP contaminated soils.

The present study sought to explore the bioremediation of oil-based paint from aqueous media using indigenous bacterial isolate Brevibacillus parabrevis strain NAP3 and its toxicity assessment against prokaryotic and eukaryotic biological models. The bacterial isolate was initially screened for bioremediation potential in mineral salts medium containing oil-based paint (conc. 300 ppm, w/v) under shake flask settings. Moreover, the percentage removal of oil-based paint from aqueous media was investigated using a spectrophotometer at 285 nm under two different experimental conditions, i.e., with and without glucose. Evidently, the bacterial isolate displayed maximum oil-based paint removal of 83% in flasks containing glucose as an additional carbon source after 14 days of the treatment, whereas without glucose supplementation it reached up to 78%. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra showed noticeable biodegradative changes of the oil-based paint relevant to peaks in the wave number frequency range of 800-600 cm , and 3,200 to 3,400 cm -1 (corresponding to C-H, C-O-N, C-O-C, and CH 2 aliphatic stretch and terminal CH 3 bonds, and N-H bonds, respectively, in treated samples as compared to controls; non-inoculated samples). After treatment, the cellfree supernatants containing oil-based paints displayed reduced cytotoxicity against brine shrimp larvae, phytotoxicity against wild reddish seeds, and antimicrobial activity against selected pathogenic bacteria and fungi, which indicated the possible use of B. parabrevis as potential oil-based paint-degrading bacterium in order to restore paint-polluted environments.

Two local bacterial isolates were isolated from agriculture soil contaminated with cypermethrin from AlAbaeje village in Baghdad city, these fields were already sprayed with cypermethrin for past few years. Primary screening was done to test bacterial ability to growth and resistance to cypermethrin by using nutrient agar plates containing 500 mg L -1 cypermethrin as a sole source of carbon and energy, and incubation at 37 ºϹ for 72 hours. Secondary screening results showed that these two bacterial isolates have the ability to grow and resistance cypermethrin concentration till 3600 mg L -1 in solid MMSM. If we increase concentration above 3600 mg L -1 bacterial isolate can't tolerate and grow in it. According to VITEK 2 compact results the dominate isolate in soil contaminated with cypermethrin was Pseudomonas aeruginosa about 87.5%. The optimum conditions (pH, temperature and incubation period) for growth of two selected isolates and biodegradation of cypermethrin were examined. The results indicated that the best growth obtain at pH 7 under 30 ºC for 14 days. In lab experiment and under optimal conditions, cypermethrin biodegradation was measured by using FTIR and GC-MS analysis. The results shown that P. aeruginosa 1 was the best isolate for degrading cypermethrin with percentage 87.9% while P. aeruginosa 2 with degrading percentage 80%.
