Isolation, Purification and Evaluation of Antibacterial Agents from Aloe vera

Abstract: The ethanol, methanol and acetone extracts of Aloe vera gel were studied for their antimicrobial activity against four Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using agar well diffusion method. The extracts showed varied levels of antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens. The ethanol and methanol extracts showed higher activity while acetone extract, showed least or no activity against most of the tested pathogens. Fractions obtained from the extracts by Thin Layer and Column Chromatography were stu… Show more

“…The results of investigation into the antimicrobial activity of different A. vera species in different locations have been published individually (Agary et al, 2005;Alemdar and Agaolu, 2009;Lawrence et al, 2009;Arumkumar and Muthuselvan, 2009). The difference in the results could be attributed to the used of the plant from geographical locations with variation in their chemical composition, different processing and isolation techniques that were applied to extract the gel and gel components from the Aloe leaf.…”

“…Topical application of the gel has been effective in the treatment of various skin diseases including burns, cuts, eczema (Arumkumar and Muthselvan, 2009) and alleviates the advances of skin cancer by cause by sun. Oral administration has been found to be effective against stomach and intestinal disorder (Lawrence et al, 2009), accelerate the healing of mouth ulcer and aid the growth of new tissues (Anonymous, 2006). It also has the ability to stimulate microphages (Davis, 1997).…”

“…The antimicrobial activity of L. angustifolia essential oil and its synergistic effects with M. chamomilla essential oil were the subject of investigation (de Rapper et al, 2013). Also, the antimicrobial effects of Aloe vera gel were confirmed (Goudarzi et al, 2015;Lawrence et al, 2009). Regardless of the antimicrobial properties of these ingredients, plant extracts or essential oils have multifunctional effects, while the chemical preservatives had only antimicrobial efficacy with many known and unknown adverse effects.…”

“…There are also healing hormones, auxin, gibberellin, and saponins, as well as proteins in Aloe vera that can enhance tissue and bone healing process so that Aloe vera can reduce inflammation caused by tooth extraction trauma, then can induce the healing process of the wound, and can finally stimulate osteoblast, as consequence, the growth of new bone will increase. 4,[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] This increasing process is also stimulated by Aloeride as polysaccharides derived from Aloe vera that has a high molecular weight and strong immunostimulator activity. 23 Thus, the group induced with Aloe vera and XCB had the highest expressions of FGF2, osteocalcin, osteoblasts, and fibroblasts started from day 7 to day 30 of examination.…”
