Isolation of Two New Ionone Glucosides from Quince ( Cydonia Oblonga Mill.) Leaves

Abstract: The 9-O-beta-D-glucopyranosides of (6R)-3-oxo-4-hydroxy-7,8-dihydro-alpha-ionol 1 and 3-oxo-5,6-epoxy-beta-ionol 2 were isolated from quince leaves. The glycosidic extract was obtained by XAD-2 adsorption and MeOH elution. After DCCC separation and flash chromatography, purification by high performance liquid chromatography was carried out. The novel quince leaf constituents were characterized as peracetates 1a and 2a.

“…Cydonia oblonga leaves contain tannins, flavonoids, lipids, proteins, free triterpenes, carotenoids, coumarins, heterogenous polysaccharides and ionone glucosides (Dinu et al, 2002;Lutz-Roder et al, 2002). Allium porrum bulbs contains flavonoid glycosides based on the kaempferol aglycone, spirastanol saponins and fatty acid (Ernesto et al, 2001;Fattorusso et al, 2001;Alfonso et al, 1999;Michael et al, 2006).…”

“…The plant also contains an enzyme, phenol peroxidase which decolorizes carcinogenic aromatic dyes in industrial waste water (Nandi et al, 2009 ; Arabaci and Usluoglu, 2014 ). Essential oils, phenolic compounds, organic acids, tetracyclic sesterterpenes, and ionone glycosides are present in different parts of quince (De Tommasi et al, 1996 ; Lutz-Roder et al, 2002 ; Oliveira et al, 2007 , 2008 ; Osman et al, 2010 ; Erdogan et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Phytochemistry. Different portions of the quince contain phenolic compounds, essential oils, organic acids, ionone glycosides, and tetracyclic sesterterpenes [31][32][33][34][35]. In the pulp, leaves, peel, seeds, and complete fruits of quinces, 27 polyphenolic substances have been discovered including citric, ascorbic, malic, oxalic, quinic, fumaric, and shikimic acids.…”
