Isolation of Rhinovirus Intertypes Related to Either Rhinoviruses 12 and 78 or 36 and 58

Abstract: Many antigenic relationships have been demonstrated among the 90 rhinovirus serotypes. Among these are reciprocal cross-reactions between serotypes 12 and 78 and between serotypes 36 and 58. Neutralizing-antibody titers to homologous virus of the related pairs are generally 16- to 64-fold higher than to the heterologous member, and neutralization by heterologous antiserum in the pools is not seen with prototype viruses. However, a number of isolates were encountered which gave anomolous results when tested wit… Show more

“…Four isolates were typed as RV 56, three isolates were typed as RV 53, and three isolates were each neutralized by antisera to both RV types 12 and 78. These isolates represent intertypes as reported by Halfpap and Cooney [1983]. Thus, 15 of 16 (94%) of the isolates that grew in cell culture were typed.…”

“…The charts of all infants or children from whom a rhinovirus was isolated and who were hospitalized at either Children's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, or New England Medical Center in Boston during 1982 and1983 were requested. Overall, 29 of 35 cases were reviewed in detail for pertinent data related to their illness, including date of admission, diagnosis on admission, date of viral culture, underlying disease state, spectrum of clinical illness (with emphasis on respiratory status, fever, and course of illness), and chest x-ray findings.…”

“…The molecular basis of serotypic diversity, inherent in rhinoviruses, is not understood. 50 of the serotypes have been put in 16 distinctgroups, based on the low level of antigenic cross-reactivity which does exist (11,12). However, it has been shown that despite this antigenic diversity, there are only two receptors on cells susceptible for human rhinoviruses (13).…”
