SUMMARY: A highly sensitive procedure of solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed for the detection of measles IgG antibody. HeLa cells persistently infected with measles virus were used as a solid-phase antigen. This technique was applied to the detection of measles IgG antibody in patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and multiple sclerosis. Normal subjects having experienced natural measles or measles vaccination and patients with various neurological diseases of non-virus nature were also examined as control groups. Measles antibody was detected at high titers in both the sera and cerebrospinal fluid of SSPE patients. Moreover, RIA/HI ratios of SSPE patients were significantly higher than those of normal subjects, suggesting the presence in the formers of antibodies to nucleocap sids at high titers as well as to viral envelopes. On the other hand, no significant difference was found in both RIA and HI titers between the sera of multiple sclerosis and those of various neurological diseases.

Chronic, relapsing myelitis has been induced in golden Syrian hamsters by the intracerebral inoculation of measles virus when the animals were less than 1 day old. No acute illness was seen in animals that developed myelitis, and the onset of the myelitis was at 5 toSO weeks after infection. In most animals the illness was slowly progressive, with hindquarter myoclonus being the most common clinical sign. Occasionally the disease involved episodic limb paresis with nearly total recovery of limb function between periods of paralysis. In most animals pathologic changes were confinedto the spinal cord and involved mononuclear cell infiltration, marked gliosis, widespread demyelination, and necrosis. Virus

SUMMARYCultures of brain cells taken from mice at I to 3 days after peripheral infection with Chikungunya virus, showed loss of contact inhibition and morphological alterations which suggested that these cells may have been transformed. In cultures infected in vitro with a low dose of about I0 ~ LDs0Jml of culture medium, areas of epithelial-like cells and hypertrophied cells were dominant, cultures were destroyed after infection with a high dose of about IO 6 LDs0/ml of culture medium. Cultures not destroyed by virus were studied for up to 4 months. The supernatant fluids of these cultures were titrated regularly in an adult mouse system in which the amounts of virus recorded varied from I0 ~'7 to 10 6.o LDs0/ml.
