Isolation of <i>Escherichia coli</i> carrying the <i>bla</i>CTX-M-1 and <i>qnrS1</i> genes from reproductive organs of broiler breeders and internal contents of hatching eggs

Abstract: This study aimed to characterize two third-generation cephalosporins- and quinolone-resistant Escherichia coli (TGCs- and Q-R-Ec) isolates recovered from the ovaries of a broiler breeder flock and the internal contents of hatching eggs produced by the broiler breeder flock. Clonal relatedness was determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The isolates displayed the same multidrug resistance profile, with resistance to ampicillin, ticarcillin, piperacillin, cefazollin, cephalothin, cefotaxime, nalidixic a… Show more

“…One of the major concerns regarding APEC colonization in broiler breeders is the vertical transmission of antibiotic-resistant genes down the poultry production pyramid [79]. Additionally, the possibility of the zoonotic potential of APEC, including the transfer of antibiotic-resistant genes to humans, has been suggested by Johnson et al [66].…”

“…Even though strict biosecurity is practiced at the top level of the breeding pyramid, there are still challenges at the lower levels, especially the broiler parents. Hence, the proper use of antibiotics in broiler breeders is critical [79,80]. Furthermore, more focus on alternative treatment approaches may also help to prevent antibiotic resistance.…”

“…Eggs are important poultry products that play an essential role in the daily healthy diet of human beings and are the most consumed food all over the world [https://www.who.int/zh/newsroom/fact-sheets/detail/salmonella-(non-typhoidal)]. Poultry eggs are also considered as reservoirs and transmission vectors of resistance genes, such as mcr-1, fosA, qnrS1, bla CTX−M−1 , bla IMP , and bla OXA−48−like (Benameur et al, 2018;Kapena et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2021Zhang et al, , 2022bKanaan et al, 2022;Li et al, 2022). Resistant bacteria and genes in eggs have the risk of spreading to humans through various ways, such as hand-toegg contact and storing unwashed eggs in fridge.…”
