Many mutants of Arabidopsis were isolated with alterations in leaf morphology thirty and forty years ago (e.g., Rédei, 1962; Lee-Chen and Steinitz-Sears, 1967; Barabas and Rédei, 1971), but each mutation was used merely as a positional marker for genetic mapping (e.g., Koornneef et al., 1983).
