PurposeThe objective of this study was to evaluate the technical-economic process efficiency of obtaining simultaneous lipo-soluble (LSF) and water-soluble (WSF) fractions from annatto seeds.Design/methodology/approachThe batches of annatto seeds were submitted to the refrigerated solid-liquid extraction process in four stages: pre-extraction, aqueous extraction, separation by decantation and filtration. After that, LSF and WSF from annatto seeds were obtained. The process efficiency and the quality of LSF and WSF were analyzed in terms of average yield and bioactive compounds (bixin, norbixin, phenolics and flavonoids) and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, they were economically evaluated in terms of costs of manufacturing and profitability parameters.FindingsThe process was efficient in terms of overall average yield (LSF = 8.68% and WSF = 2.76%) (w/w) and in terms of quality, mainly with higher average yields of bixin (82.34% in LSF) and norbixin (29.59% in WSF) (w/w). The concentration of bioactive compounds in the fractions promoted an increase in inhibiting free radicals (DPPH* and ABTS*+) and in the ferric-reducing power (FRAP). LSF showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.06 mg mL-1 for S. aureus and 0.13 mg mL-1 for S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis. The lowest manufacturing costs were obtained for the LSF due to its higher extraction yield compared to the WSF. Plants on an industrial scale of 100 and 1000 L were considered economically viable, with a return on investment of 5 and 2 years.Originality/valueThus, fractions (WSF and LSF) can be applied as natural additives, as sources of bioactive compounds for nutraceutical and/or pharmaceutical, and in the development of other innovative processes. These results have practical applicability for pharmaceutical and food industry.Highlights Green processing of annatto seeds obtains fractions rich in antioxidant compounds.Efficiently presents a high yield of bixin and other bioactive compounds.Effective in concentrating compounds that inhibit microbial growth.Fractions are more accessible sources of bioactive compounds for isolation.Cost of manufacturing (COM) and profitability are studied.

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells or DSSC is the latest solar cell type generation that uses natural dyes as sensitizers. Bixin extracted from the seeds of kesumba (Bixa orellana L) is one of the natural dyes that can be used as a sensitizer. This study aims to determine the effect of the active surface area of solar cells on the effectivity and reusability of bixin-sensitized solar cells based on their open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Isc), and maximum energy conversion efficiency. The results of this study will provide an overview of the best surface area to produce DSSC with the highest maximum energy conversion efficiency and the lifetime of bixin sensitized solar cells. The measurement results showed that the resulting Voc for each variation of the surface area 1, 2, and 3 cm2 was 344; 719; 1002 mV under intensity 100 mW cm-2, while the Isc produced under the same intensity was 0.223; 0.471; 0.680 mA. Based on the calculation results, the maximum power generated by each surface area was 0,077; 0,338; 0,681 W. This means that the larger the active surface area of the solar cell, the greater the voltage and current generated. In this work, the highest efficiency was produced by solar cells with a surface area of 2 cm2, which is 0.085%. The solar cells fabricated in this study can be reused for five days under continuous irradiation.

The naturally occurring apo-carotenoid bixin is obtained from annatto (Bixa orellana). It is unique among the natural carotenoids through its water solubility and easily extractability from the seed coat of Bixa orellana. Bixin is (2E,4E,6E,8E,10E,12E,14E,16Z, 18E)-20- methoxy-4,8,13,17-tetramethyl-20-oxicosa 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18-nonaenoic acid, an apo-carotenoid which is a terpenoid compound derived from the oxidative cleavage of carotenoids. Several biological activities of bixin has been reported earlier such as selective antimyeloma effects of cis-bixin, antinociceptive and anti-Inflammatory effects, antioxidant action against cis-platine induced chromosome in rats, hypoglycemic effect in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, allodynia, anxious and depressive-like behaviors, targeting NRF2 for improved skin barrier function and photoprotection, antiatherogenic effect in hypercholesterolemic rabbits, triggering apoptosis of cancer cells, immunomodulatory role in dogs, sensitization of human melanoma cells to dacarbazine-induced apoptosis, sensitization of human lung cancer and cervical cancer cell to cisplatin in vitro, anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity, antibacterial activity of cis-bixin conjugated silver nanoparticles, protective effect on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, bixin/crocetin nanoparticles on quality and shelf life improvement of cheddar cheese etc. In this review, the biological properties of bixin has been discussed. A practical method for the isolation of bixin 1 from the seed coat of Bixa orellana commonly known as “Sinduri” (in Bengali) and its characterization has also been reported.
