Isolation and Molecular Characteristics of a CIAV Isolate From Pigeons, China

Abstract: Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) mainly infects chickens and causes immunosuppression. In this study, a CIAV isolate, designated as Pigeon-CIAV-1906, was efficiently isolated from two sick pigeons by inoculating the samples into MSB1 cells. The genome of Pigeon-CIAV-1906 was amplified by PCR and analyzed. The genome size of Pigeon-CIAV-1906 was 2,298 bp with the highest homology (99.5%) to Jilin strain (JL14023) and the lowest homology (91.5%) to Brazil strain (KY024579), which phylogenetically clustered… Show more

“…Domestic pigeons, as animals that are free-flying and habituated to humans, have the potential for both being viral reservoirs and for transmitting various pathogens between poultry facilities and wild birds. For example, cases of detection of viruses pathogenic to poultry in pigeons have been documented for CIAV, PPMV-1 and HPAIV subtype H5N1, among others [43][44][45][46]. Due to the paucity of data about the genetic diversity and distribution of coronaviruses, monitoring pigeons for potentially pathogenic factors is of undeniable importance.…”

“…Chicken infectious anemia (CIA) is a viral disease caused by the chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) and primarily affects young chicks. It is characterized by aplastic anemia, pale bone marrow, lymphoid tissue atrophy, and compromised immune function [ 1 , 2 ]. CIAV is a non-enveloped, icosahedral symmetrical virus particle belonging to the Anelloviridae family, with a diameter ranging from 25 nm to 26.5 nm and a genome size of approximately 2.3 kb [ 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…CIAV is the only member of the genus gyrovirus of the family Anelloviridae with 20-dihedral symmetry and no envelope ( Goryo et al, 1985 ; Natesan et al, 2006 ), and almost all of its ssDNA nucleic acids are 2,298 nt in length ( Ducatez et al, 2006 ). CIAV contains three overlapped ORFs, encoding three distinct viral proteins: major capsid and immunogenic protein (VP1, 51.6 kDa), non-structural scaffold protein (VP2, 24.0 kDa), and apoptin (VP3, 13.6 kDa) ( Noteborn et al, 1991 ; Shao et al, 2021 ). Chickens are the host of CIAV, and all ages are susceptible, mainly affecting chickens of 2–3 weeks.…”
