Isolation and identification of probiotic lactic acid bacteria from curd and in vitro evaluation of its growth inhibition activities against pathogenic bacteria

Abstract: The aim of this study was to isolate and identify probiotic lactic acid bacteria from curd and evaluate in vitro, its growth inhibition activities against pathogenic bacteria. A total of nine strains of Lactobacillus were isolated from curd and identification of strains was done by biochemical and physiological tests and Lactobacillus leichmannii, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus coagulans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus lact… Show more

“…Several earlier reports have documented the varied antibacterial activity of CFSs of Lactobacillus strains. Similar to our findings, Hawaz (2014) had also observed that filtered supernatants of some of the tested Lactobacillus strains did not exhibit any inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus , E. coli , and Klebsiella . Recently, Jose et al (2015) reported that none of the lactobacilli supernatant could inhibit the growth of E. coli .…”

“…Our findings are in agreement with those obtained by Balamurugan et al (2014), who also reported high antagonistic activity of curd Lactobacillus isolates of Indian origin against Salmonella Typhimurium and E. coli . In another study, Hawaz (2014) also reported moderate activity of curd lactobacilli against Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp.…”

“…Furthermore, in agreement with other studies, none of the isolated LAB showed hemolytic activity on sheep blood agar (Maragkoudakis et al, 2006;Hawaz, 2014). Resistance to gastric conditions and absence of hemolytic activity are important safety parameters for the selection of probiotic strains (FAO/WHO, 2002).…”

“…The ability to withstand bile salt is an important factor for the in vitro selection of probiotic bacteria [22, 36]. Both Lactobacillus salivarius C86 and Lactobacillus amylovorus C94 were able to survive simultaneous low pH and bile simulation at the pH of the stomach of cattle while it receives food [37].…”
