Isolation and Identification of Phenylethanoid Glycosides from Aloysia polystachya and Its Activity as Inhibitors of Monoamine Oxidase-A

Abstract: Aloysia polystachya is used as a sedative and antidepressant by the indigenous populations of Argentina and Paraguay, but the compounds associated with these activities have not been determined. We have separated and identified the main constituents of the hydroethanolic extract of A. polystachya by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and confirmed the presence of acteoside, isoacteoside, 6'-acetylacteoside, and 4’,4’’’,5,5’’-tetrahydroxy-6,6’’,3’’’-trimethoxy-[C7–O–C7’’]-biflavone by NMR… Show more

“…In other Verbenaceae species, such as Aloysia polystachya, the anxiolytic and antidepressant like activity was determined 9,11,28,29,13 , and phenylethanoids glycoside and flavonoids from the hydroethanolic extract of leaves was described 28 . Additionally, phenylethanoid glycoside, particularly the main component acteoside or verbascoside was determined to have inhibitory activity of monoamine oxidase-A, and both anxiolytic and antidepressant activity have been associated to the presence of this component [28][29] .…”

“…Overall the treatment with HELAp, either oral or through immersion, had an anxiolytic activity similar to the treatment with buspirone. It is worth pointing out that acteoside has a modulatory effect in the Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) [11]. However, Carvalho [72], in a study with rats, suggested central depressor effect to this compound.…”

“…The most representative compounds of this species are phenylethanoid and phenylpropanoid glycosides such as forsythoside A, plantainoside C, martynoside [10], and, mainly, the acteoside [10,11]. Phenylpropanoids are water-soluble polyphenols, largely found in medicinal plants.…”

“…The existence of a relationship between chronic pain and depression is now widely accepted among researchers (Rojas-Corrales et al, 2003). Chronic pain and depression are two very frequent and debilitating concurrent conditions.…”
