Isolation and identification of killer yeasts from sugar cane molasses

Abstract: M . BONILLA-SALINAS. P. L A P P E , M . U L L O A , M . G A R C~A -G A R I B A Y AND L. G O M E Z -R U I Z . 1995. A total of 13 yeast strains were isolated from 10 samples of sugar cane molasses obtained from sugar mills in Mexico; nine of them were killer strains. T h e r e was a t least one killer strain in every sample. T h e resulting species were the following : Torulaspora delbrueckii (2), Schizosaccharomyces pombe (7), Cryptococcus albidus var. albidus ( 1) and Saccharomyces I . 1 . cerevisiae (3). “…Fahrasmane et al ( 1988 ) isolated S. pombe from molasses, rum fermentations, soil of sugar cane plantings and soil around a rum manufacturing facility on Haiti. Additionally, S. pombe was found in 3 out of 10 sugar mills in Mexico (Bonilla‐Salinas et al 1995 ). In a more recent study on the microbiology of rum production conducted in Queensland, Australia, S. pombe was isolated from 6 out of the 16 samples of molasses taken at the same rum producing facility before clarification of the raw material (Green 2015 ).…”

“…Killer activities against S. cerevisiae and C. glabrata were described for some S. pombe strains (Bonilla‐Salinas et al 1995 ). Thus, it cannot be excluded that S. pombe could suppress proliferation of S. octosporus to a certain degree.…”

“…The killer phenomenon is widespread among both laboratory and wild‐type yeasts of various origins and genera ( Philliskirk & Young 1975; Cuinier & Gros 1983; Rosini 1983; Ciolfi 1985; Vagnoli et al . 1993 ; Bonilla‐Salinas et al . 1995 ; Da Silva 1997).…”

“…The killer phenomenon occurs in such natural substrates as fruits, mushrooms, decaying plant materials, soil [3], fermentations [4–7], sugar cane molasses [8], aquatic environments [9, 10], olive brines [11] and maize kernels [12]. This phenomenon may play an important role in the ecology of yeasts.…”
