Isolation and characterization of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degrading bacteria from Nsukka soils in Nigeria

Abstract: Twenty-four bacteria capable of utilizing naphthalene, as their sole source of carbon and energy for growth were isolated from three different sites in Nsukka, Nigeria. By standard bacteriological methods, these bacteria were characterized taxonomically as belonging to the genus Pseudomonas, Burkholderia or Actinomycetes. Two of the isolates, which showed the highest growth during screening as demonstrated by an increase in their optical densities (OD 600 ) and identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkhold… Show more

“…The bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Kiyohara et al, 1992;Nnamchi et al, 2006) and Bacillus subtilis ( Abdulsalam and Omale, 2009) and the Fertilizer (NPK 20:10:10) used were obtained from the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom, Plateau State-Nigeria and Bauchi Fertilizer Company Limited, Bauchi-Nigeria respectively. In addition, potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate (K 2 HPO 4 ) used was of analytical grade.…”

“…The carbon atoms are arranged in a series of adjoining sixmembered rings. Their biochemical persistence in the environment arises from dense clouds of π electrons on both sides of the ring structures making them resistant to neucleophilic attack (Jonsen et al, 2005;Nnamchi et al, 2006). PAHs have been documented to cause several health problems (Zhang et al, 2009).…”
