Isolation and Characterization of Salmonella Jumbo-Phage pSal-SNUABM-04

Abstract: The increasing emergence of antimicrobial resistance has become a global issue. Therefore, many researchers have attempted to develop alternative antibiotics. One promising alternative is bacteriophage. In this study, we focused on a jumbo-phage infecting Salmonella isolated from exotic pet markets. Using a Salmonella strain isolated from reptiles as a host, we isolated and characterized the novel jumbo-bacteriophage pSal-SNUABM-04. This phage was investigated in terms of its morphology, host infectivity, grow… Show more

“…Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major concerns of the medical sciences [8][9][10][11]. The greater this concern is, the more research into the alternative measures [1][2][3][4]13]. Bacteriophage is the most promising alternative for antibiotics.…”

“…Bacteriophage (phage) is a kingdom of viruses that invades bacterial cells while replicating in them [1]. As bacteriophages have the capability to induce bacterial metabolism disruption and death, they are emerging as alternative treatment modalities for bacteria with antibiotics resistance [1][2][3][4]. Ever since the first discovery of bacteriophages in the 1910s, efforts have been made to use them as therapeutic agents [1,4].…”

“…Many authors construct phylogenetic trees for phages using specific genes/proteins, such as the major capsid protein, terminases or RNA polymerase [ 20 , 50 , 53 ]. Since LucasX does not show a high degree of similarity to other phages, we decided to use the four protein clusters that were identified as core in the protein cluster analysis.…”

“…Several experimental approaches have been offered for the isolation and characterization of bacteriophages ( Thanki et al, 2019 ; Bujak et al, 2020 ; Kwon et al, 2020 ; McCutcheon et al, 2020 ; Sofy et al, 2021 ). Similarly, many Vibrio cholerae phages have also been isolated and characterized ( Nesper et al, 1999 ; Faruque et al, 2005a , b ; Nelson et al, 2009 ; Seed et al, 2011 ; Comeau et al, 2012 ; Das et al, 2012 ; Li et al, 2013 ; Solis-Sanchez et al, 2016 ; Naser et al, 2017 ).…”
