Isolation and characterization of antimutagenic components of Glycyrrhiza aspera against N-methyl-N-nitrosourea

Abstract: BackgroundA powdered ethanolic extract of Glycyrrhiza aspera root exhibits antimutagenic activity against N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) based on the Ames assay with Salmonella typhimurium TA1535. The aim of this study was to identify the antimutagenic components of the powdered ethanolic extract of G. aspera root.ResultsThe powdered ethanolic extract of G. aspera root was sequentially suspended in n-hexane, carbon tetrachloride, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol, and each solvent soluble fraction and … Show more

“…The contents of GA and PF, which were the most abundant compounds in HHXYT, were in the ranges of 4.50–13.5 and 3.90–9.10 mg/g for PZ‐1∼PZ‐16, 2.76–8.18 and 5.58–7.26 mg/g for KD‐1∼KD‐7, 1.64–4.52 and 3.95–7.52 mg/g for JC‐1∼JC‐7, respectively. Moreover, LFB, one of the quality markers of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch in HHXYT, has showed the antimutagenic and anticancer activities [57]. The content was in the range of 0.002–0.030 mg/g, which has been quantified for the first time.…”

“…Glyurallin B belongs to the group of organic compounds known as isoflavones. Gyurallin B compound has been shown to act as an anticancer that inhibits KB cell proliferation, and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity ( Fu et al, 2013 , Inami et al, 2017 , Ito et al, 2020 ). Muscanone is an antifungal compound of flavones.…”

“…These components were demonstrated to possess an antigenotoxic effect against carcinogenic MNU. So this extract can be used to prevent DNA damage by N-nitrosamines for cancer chemoprevention [21]. It was found that date palm extract displays strong antimutagenic activity against ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and mitomycin C-induced mutagenesis, when it was analyzed using E. coli RNA polymerase β-based rifampicin resistance assay, but did not show any significant antimutagenesis against ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) [22].…”
