Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Klebsiella pneumoniae N4-like Bacteriophage KP8

Abstract: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a common pathogen, associated with a wide spectrum of infections, and clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae often possess multiple antibiotic resistances. Here, we describe a novel lytic N4-like bacteriophage KP8, specific to K. pneumoniae, including its genome, partial structural proteome, biological properties, and proposed taxonomy. Electron microscopy revealed that KP8 belongs to the Podoviridae family. The size of the KP8 genome was 73,679 bp, and it comprised 97 putative open readin… Show more

“…So far, only N4-like phages infectious for Gram-negative host bacteria belonging to the α-proteobacteria such as Roseobacter [ 21 ], β-proteobacteria such as Achromobacter [ 3 ] and γ-proteobacteria such as Pseudomonas [ 43 ] from different habitats have been described. From the morphological perspective, N4-like phages show characteristic features of podoviruses, capsid sizes range from 50 [ 35 ] to 85 nm [ 63 ] with short non-contractile tails.…”

“…Phage host strain CEMTC 2064 was obtained from the same collection. The strain was identified as Enterobacter cloacae by sequencing a 1308-bp fragment of the 16S rRNA gene and a 501 bp internal portion of the rpoB gene, as described previously [ 15 ]. Sequences of the 16S rRNA and rpoB of the investigated strain were deposited in the GenBank database under accession numbers MW980939 and MZ062217, respectively.…”
