Isolation and Characterization of a 1,3-Dichloro-2-Propanol-Degrading Bacterium

Abstract: Arthrobacter sp. strain PY1, a bacterium having the ability to degrade 1,3-dichlotopropanol (1,3-DCP), was isolated from a soil sample of a chemical plant. Strain PY1 degraded 1000 mg/l (7.75 mM) of 1,3-DCP completely within 7 days, and the ability was elevated by acclimatization up to 4000 mg/l/week. Addition of nutrients such as peptone, glucose or glycerol showed no or slight effect on the degrading activity. These results suggest that strain PY1 is a useful organism in a biological control system for 1,3-D… Show more

“…Mineral salt medium (MSM) was modified from Yonetani et al (2004) O, 15; and agar, 12 (in case of MSM agar only). All the salt solutions were separately prepared and autoclaved at 121°C, 15 lb pressure for 15 min, and dissolved one by one into the main MSM medium (approximately 980 ml of distilled water).…”

“…In order to enrich oil-based paint-degrading bacteria, a predetermined amount (3%) of oil-based paint stock solution was added to a 250 ml conical flask to obtain the final concentration of (300 ppm/ml) and the flask was filled with 100 ml sterilized mineral salt medium (MSM) of determined composition prepared with slight modification from Yonetani, et al [20], and adjusted to pH 7.0±2 using 6 N HCl and 1 M NaOH solutions. ) was added into the medium for MSM agar only.…”

“…[17][18][19][20][21] Halohydrin dehalogenase, halohydrin epoxidase or hydrogen-halide lyase are alternative names for the haloalcohol dehalogenase. 22 Haloalcohol dehalogenase can be found in several organisms, such as Flavobacterium sp., 23 Agrobacterium radiobacter, 24 Arthrobacter sp., 25,26 Pseudomonas sp., 27 Corynebacterium sp., 28 Alcaligenes sp., 29 Agrobacterium tumefaciens, 30 Agromyces mediolanus, 31 and so on. Most haloalcohol dehalogenases genes were cloned and sequenced.…”
