Isolation and characterization of a new antifungal metabolite ofTrichoderma reesei

Abstract: A mycelial extract of Trichoderma reesei (P-12) was separated into four fractions by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Out of these, two were found to exhibit antifungal activity when tested against plant pathogenic fungi. The level of antifungal compounds was higher in media containing glucose as the carbon source as compared to one containing cellulose. The synthesis of these antifungal compounds started after 3 days of inoculation at 30~ and continued upto 8 days. No further increase was record… Show more

“…A few studies have claimed production of simple trichothecene-type toxins by species of Trichoderma (Adams and Hanson 1972; Bamburg and Strong 1969;Watts et al 1988;Cvetnić and Pepelnjak 1997; see also Sivasithamparam and Ghisalberti 1998 for a review), but in most of the studies, nonspecific analytical methods such as TLC and HPLC were used and no details of taxonomic identification were given. Of these reports, we have only been able to examine the T. polysporum strain (IMI 40624) reported by Adams and Hanson (1972).…”

“…Subsequently, this compound has been obtained from T. polysporum and T. sporulosum (Adams and Hanson 1972) T. reesei (Watts et al 1988). The deacetyl derivative trichodermol (101) was obtained by hydrolysis of 100 (Godtfredsen and Vangedal 1964), and later isolated as a natural product from T. polysporum and T. sporulosum (Adams and Hanson 1972).…”

“…Trichoderma isolates were grown on potato dextrose agar medium (PDA) for five days at 258C in the dark and then transferred to light conditions for two days. Following fungus colonies growth on plates, the medium with mycelium were cut into 50 mm plugs (Papavizas 1985;Watts et al 1988;Kubicek et al 2003).…”
