Isolation and Antifungal Activity of Plant Lectins against some Plant Pathogenic Fungi

Abstract: Two lectins from seeds of white kidney bean (Phaseoulus vulgaries) and Soybean (Glycine max) were isolated and purified from saline crude extracts of seeds using ammonium sulfate precipitation. The two pure lectins were tested in vitro against two plant pathogenic fungi, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani. Mycelial growth inhibition technique was performed in accordance with standard protocols to evaluate antifungal activity. Mycelial of both tested fungi were inhibited by the lectins extracts. “…(named LG by authors) were tested against this same fungus and LP was the most potent among the tested compounds, with EC50 of 5058 mg L -1 , 4872 mg L -1 and 3617 mg L -1 , after 48 h, 72 h and 120 h, respectively. In contrast, the LG was the lowest active, with EC50 of 13982 mg L -1 , 9449 mg L -1 and 5635 mg L -1 after 48 h, 72 h and 120 h against the same fungus [42].…”

“…Available references indicated that Phaseolus vulgaris lectin is effective against some pathogenic bacteria and fungi such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutants, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans (Hamed, Einas et al, 2017). Also, Glycine max lectin is effective against some pathogenic fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani (Mohsen, Soad et al , 2018). While Moringa oleifera lectin has antifungal effect against some fungi such as Aspergillus niger, A. flavus , Candida albicans (Ayirezang et al, 2020 andSantos et al, 2021).…”

“…Chitin in cell wall of fungi might be the target of antifungal lectins. Several plant lectins have antifungal activities against Fusarium species (Mohsen et al, 2018). Nikitina et al (2017) recently reviewed lectins from mycelia and fruiting bodies of basidiomycetes.…”
