Isolation: A Concept Analysis

Abstract: Three attributes were identified: sensory deprivation, social isolation, and confinement. Antecedents included individual perception and situational dimensions. Consequences included anxiety, depression, mood disturbances, anger, loneliness, and adverse health events. Through this concept analysis, isolation has been theoretically defined as a state in which an individual experiences a reduction in the level of normal sensory and social input with possible involuntary limitations on physical space or movement.… Show more

“…In line with the definition of isolation reported in the concept analysis by Gilmartin, Grota, and Sousa (2013), isolation-related loneliness was defined as "An unpleasant feeling in which neutropenic patients experience a reduction in the level of normal sensory and social input with limitations on physical space and movement, in order to be protected from infection and helped to heal".…”

“…Similarly, it has been argued that the need to belong, the need for intimacy, and the need for community are fundamental aspects of the human condition (Baumeister & Leary, ; Peplau & Perlman, ). At the same time, the opposite (i.e., the absence of humans) may trigger thoughts of loneliness (Peplau & Perlman, ) and social isolation (Gilmartin, Grota, & Sousa, ), which represent negatively charged and unpleasant states for most people. Indeed, they are associated with anxiety, depression, anger, boredom, and dissatisfaction (Gilmartin et al., ; Perlman & Peplau, ).…”

“…Hearing impairment (HI) could plausibly contribute to anxiety and poor mental health outcomes through mediating pathways of cognitive impairment (Lin, Ferrucci, et al, 2011; Lin et al, 2013; Valentijn et al, 2005), social isolation (Mick, Kawachi, & Lin, 2014), or disability (Chen et al, 2014). Sensory deprivation has also been proposed as a possible cause for anxiety and mood disturbances (Gilmartin, Grota, & Sousa, 2013; Heine & Browning, 2002). Alternatively, shared common etiologic factors such as age, cardiovascular disease (Gates, Cobb, Dagostino, & Wolf, 1993), or other demographic factors (Agrawal, Platz, & Niparko, 2008) could underlie any observed association between HI and anxiety.…”
