Isolated primary tuberculosis of spleen—A rare entity in the immuno-competent patient

Abstract: HighlightsSplenic involvement in Tuberculosis is generally miliary and in the immuno-compromised host.Isolated splenic tuberculosis in otherwise healthy patient is rare.Global burden of tuberculosis is largely contributed by sputum smear negative and extra-pulmonary cases.Need to accurately screen, diagnose and treat these category of cases.Use of minimally invasive surgery for diagnosis and therapy has been advocated.

“…The spleen might be involved in the course of TB as an isolated involvement or being secondary to miliary TB. Although there are few studies that have reported isolated splenic TB in immunocompetent cases, 4,5 usually, a congenital or acquired immunodeficiency is a predisposing factor. There are few studies that report HIV infection, diabetes mellitus, organ transplantation, and immunosuppressive therapy as the risk factors of splenic TB.…”

“…Splenic TB can be classified into five pathomorphological types: miliary, nodular, spleen abscess, calcific, and mixed type. Among these, the spleen abscess is the most common and typically presents with the most symptoms [7]. The clinical presentation of splenic TB can often be vague and nonspecific, which frequently leads to delayed diagnosis.…”

“…The chemical groups of graphene oxide have been found to be a feasible and effective means of improving the dispersion of graphene. In addition, functional side groups bound to the surface of graphene oxide are there to improve the interfacial interaction between graphene oxide and the matrix, similarly to that observed for functionalised carbon nanotube-based nanocomposites [15]. Therefore, by combining the remarkable mechanical properties of graphene oxide sheets with green synthesised nanoparticles, they offer promising nanoscale fillers for the next generation of nanocomposite materials [16].…”
