Isolated Pericardial Hydatid Cyst

Abstract: Cardiac hydatid cyst is an uncommon disease, mostly involving the myocardium. Involvement of the pericardium or isolated pericardial hydatid cysts are extremely rare and therefore can mimic other pericardial cystic diseases. Herein we present the radiological and surgical findings of an asymptomatic isolated pericardial hydatid cyst

“…Electrocardiograms show nonspecific repolarization changes, atrioventricular blocks, and premature ventricular complexes. 6 Echocardiography is the best initial imaging modality, due to wide availability and high sensitivity. The hydatid cyst is seen as a mixed echogenic mass, with a detached membrane being the only diagnostic sign.…”

“…The hydatid cyst is seen as a mixed echogenic mass, with a detached membrane being the only diagnostic sign. 6 For cardiac hydatid disease, results are better when treated surgically compared to conservative management, hence, even asymptomatic patients should be considered for surgery. 7 Resection on cardiopulmonary bypass is safest because the risk of spillage is reduced.…”

“…The ideal initial imaging modality is echocardiography because of its great sensitivity and widespread availability. The only diagnostic feature of a hydatid cyst is a detached membrane, which is observed as a mixed echogenic mass (Vurdem et al, 2015). Surgical management is regarded as the gold standard for treatment and primarily affects the lungs (30%) and liver (60-70%).…”
