This study deals with the development of a proportional-resonant (PR) control applied on voltage regulation and harmonics compensation of a standalone self-excited induction generator (SEIG) for micro-hydro power generation system. The generation system considers: (i) a three-phase induction generator (IG) as SEIG, (ii) which is driven by an unregulated microhydro turbine, (iii) a three-phase three-legs distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) and (iv) linear and nonlinear loads connected to the AC bus. The voltage regulation is performed through the injection of reactive power to the AC bus through the DSTATCOM, providing excitation current to the IG. It is considered the employment of PR control techniques, which offers suitable voltage regulation through voltage harmonics compensation in the point of common coupling. Furthermore, frequency regulation is performed on the demand side by an electronic load control connected to the DC bus of the DSTATCOM. Experimental results were obtained to demonstrate the good performance of the voltage and frequency regulation, provided by the control system during transients of linear and non-linear loads.

Stand-alone hydropower plant is a major energy source in grid isolated zone because they do not require dams to be built. In a stand-alone hydropower plant Voltage and frequency, instability is caused by the load variation. This can cause the alternator to spin very quickly or very slowly, causing the induced voltage and output frequency to rise or fall. Furthermore, if the rate of alternator growth is too high or too low, the load appliances connected to the generator can undergo huge damage. For optimal overall performance of a small hydropower plant, generated voltage and frequency must be within the required range. To overcome these issues, a system is discussed in this paper. The proposed system not only stabilizes stand-alone hydropower plant output through an electronic load control system but is also easy and price-effective. Electronic load controller managed small hydro energy generation that takes into vital parameters, i.e, stabilization of both voltage and frequency despite variable consumer load. The presented technique consists of PID and fuzzy logic control system and also a couple of DC motors interconnected with an H-bridge to control the water valve known as a gate. The proposed control system also consists of several dummy loads to dump the extra generated power to keep the output power constant and to overcome frequency variations. For increased efficiency and life span of the generator, dummy loads used are switched only at zero crossings of a sinusoidal signal. The proposed system is implemented on both Simulink/MATLAB and Proteus. The simulation results prove that the presented technique overcomes the challenges of stand-alone hydropower plants.

Abstract. This paper presents the experimental evaluation of the performance of 3-φ self-excited induction generator (SEIG) suitable for pico-hydro power generation system feeding domestic load in remote mountainous region. The use of induction generators is most suitable for renewable energy conversion systems due to their enormous advantages over conventional synchronous generators. Important features of induction generators include the simplicity in construction, ruggedness, simplified control, ease in maintenance and small size per generated kW. The performance characteristics of 3-φ SEIG feeding isolated load are evaluated using MATLAB-Simulink model based on the prevalent renewable energy sources inputs and loading conditions in mountainous terrain of Himalayas. The results are validated using an experimental set-up comprising of 3-φ, 3 HP induction motor run as 3-φ induction generator driven by 5HP, 4-pole DC shunt motor acting as prime-mover.
